Overall Rating
4.3/5
Face Rear & Front

When I hear the words ‘UPPAbaby Knox’, the first things that spring to mind are build and comfort. And while I’d love to surprise you, this is exactly what this high-end convertible car seat brings to the table. The safety extras are accompanied by ample padding that makes it one of the safest and most comfortable car seats we’ve ever tested. Alongside its best-in-class reliable protection, the Knox delivers a luxurious design that makes it different and distinguishable from average budget convertible car seats. The included accessories like the fit inlay and a dishwasher-safe cup holder increase its practicality and provide convenience for both kids and parents. But the 14-pound minimum weight requirement makes it not suitable for newborns and small infants. Considering its high price, the KNOX is less competitive than its cheaper alternatives like the Graco Extend2Fit.

2. Who Is It Best For?

Will the UPPAbaby KNOX Be a Good Fit For Your Child and Family?

If you have a keen eye for build quality, want a convertible car seat that can last for good years, and are searching for a car seat that will deliver safe and comfortable trips fitting stably in your vehicles, the UPPAbaby KNOX should be high up on your list.

However, it’s not able to accommodate newborns and infants under 14 pounds, has fewer headrest and recline positions, and it’s not cheap.

Aside from its exceptional build quality and ranking as one of the most comfortable convertible car seats, the KNOX is heavier and bulkier, resulting in a lower score in portability. It’s better to keep it in the vehicle. And for that reason, I wouldn’t recommend it to parents with a need for air travel.

If you’re planning to have your kid travel with you, especially for use on planes, go get some lightweight convertible car seats.

3. Value for Money

Is the price tag worth it?

Whether you think the KNOX is worth the money will come down to what you’re looking for from a convertible car seat.

If you want a premium car seat that is arguably one of the best-built models in our 80+ strong database, the $349.99 price tag is worth every cent. The same can be said if you’re searching for a convertible car seat that transitions seamlessly from rear-facing to forward-facing whilst maintaining safety and comfort features.

Plus, for the top weight and height limits, the UPPAbaby KNOX is up there with the best – 65 pounds and 49 inches.

However, if you’re on the hunt for a car seat that can accommodate newborns as light as 4 or 5 pounds or a lightweight model for easy carrying to travel around, you’ll want to look elsewhere.

Ultimately, when it comes to overall performance and quality, where we factor in all aspects (i.e. capacity, safety, comfort, practicality, convenience, build quality & price), there are more affordable convertible car seats on the market.

4. Design

Dimensions and Width

If you’re searching for a convertible car seat with a sleek design that doesn’t take up an excessive amount of space, the UPPAbaby KNOX may appeal to you.

With dimensions measuring 23.75″ (length) x 18.75″ (width) x 27.4″-32.5″ (height), the KNOX car seat is relatively compact to fit in numerous types of vehicles without sacrificing your child’s comfort or safety.

The width of the UPPAbaby KNOX is approximately 18.75 inches, which is considered an average width for convertible car seats. But it does not rank in our narrowest convertible car seats list – where it needs to be under 18 inches in width.

Since car seat models and vehicle interiors vary significantly, it’s always a good idea to measure your car’s backseat before purchasing a convertible car seat, especially if you have multiple children who need to sit in the backseat.

Portability

The UPPAbaby KNOX convertible car seat tips the scales at approximately 32.5 pounds, which may make it seem bulky when compared to some other car seat models. The weight of the KNOX can be attributed to several factors, including the car seat’s reinforced shell, sturdy base, and included accessories.

It has a reinforced shell that offers advanced protection from all around – rear and side. This shell is built to endure the force of any unexpected impacts that may occur while driving, providing parents with peace of mind that their child is safe while seated in the KNOX. While this reinforced steel shell adds weight to the KNOX convertible car seat, it also adds an important layer of protection.

Additionally, the base of the KNOX is engineered to provide a secure anchor for the car seat. This sturdiness ensures that the KNOX stays in place while driving, minimizing the risk of a hazardous car seat installation that may occur from a lighter or less substantial base.

Lastly, this car seat comes with lots of accessories, such as a cup holder and infant inlay, which adds to its overall weight. However, the added conveniences of these accessories may make the extra weight worthwhile for parents and caregivers.

Without a doubt, the UPPAbaby KNOX won’t have a high score in portability. The bulky design makes it challenging for most parents to carry it from one vehicle to another.

The best place to use this heavy convertible car seat is in the car. If you have more travel needs, better to find some portable car seats or models that can be folded.

Cup Holder - One

The UPPAbaby KNOX convertible car seat comes with a convenient built-in cup holder, providing parents with an easy way to keep drinks or snacks within easy reach for their child. The cup holder is the perfect size and shape to accommodate most standard-sized cups, bottles, and snack containers.

Made from high-quality materials, the cup holder is able to stand up to repeated use. It is also removable and dishwasher-safe, making it easy to clean when needed.

The placement of the cup holder is also well thought-out. There is a pre-designed slot on the right (and left) side around the car seat, near the edge of the car seat, making it within easy reach for your child to get their drink or snack without having to disturb the car seat’s harness.

The included cup holder adds to the overall convenience of the car seat. It helps parents and caregivers stay organized and ensures that their child has easy access to drinks and snacks during car rides.

Color option

The UPPAbaby KNOX convertible car seat comes in several color options, allowing parents to select a car seat that matches their personal style and preferences. The color options available for the KNOX include Jake, Bryce, and NOA.

Jake is a bold black color, making a striking statement and perfectly suitable for both genders.

Bryce is a light grey color that can be considered gender-neutral, making it a great option for parents who want a car seat that can be passed down to future siblings or family members.

Finally, NOA is a blue, cold neutral color that is suitable for all, including boys and girls.

As you can see, UPPAbaby does not categorize its color options into “boy” or “girl” colors but instead offer gender-neutral color options for parents to choose from.

While some may prefer more traditional gender-specific color options for their child’s car seat, the gender-neutral color options provide parents with more flexibility and versatility when selecting a car seat to fit their personal style or to use it for future children.

If you have a clear willingness to purchase some car seats for girls, check our posts on the best pink car seats and purple-colored car seats.

Headrest and Harness - 8 Positions

The UPPAbaby KNOX car seat is designed with your child’s comfort in mind. One of the key features that contribute to a comfortable ride is the 8-position headrest and harness adjustment, along with the no-rethread harness design.

As your child grows taller, you can adjust the headrest and harness to ensure that their head and shoulders are properly supported and that the harness is snug and secure.

The no-rethread harness design allows you to adjust the position of the harness without having to rethread it through the car seat, without the hassle of having to rethread it each time.

These features also contribute to the safety of the car seat. A properly adjusted headrest and harness ensure that the seat fits your child snugly and securely, reducing the risk of injury in the event of a collision. The no-rethread design allows for quick and easy adjustments, ensuring that the seat stays properly adjusted and secure.

In addition to the adjustability of the headrest and harness, the KNOX is designed with comfortable materials and padding. The seat is upholstered in soft and breathable upholstery, with plush padding to provide a comfortable ride for your child.

Reclines - 4 Positions

The UPPAbaby KNOX allows four different reclining options so that you can always find a perfect angle for your child to relax and nap or sit up and enjoy the ride.

The 4 recline options also help ensure that the car seat is properly installed in your vehicle. The proper recline angle helps keep your child’s airway open and prevents their head from falling forward. This reduces the risk of injury in the event of a collision or sudden stop.

Overall, the 4 recline options in the UPPAbaby KNOX car seat provide both comfort and safety for your child, allowing you to adjust the seat to fit your child’s individual needs and ensuring that the car seat is properly installed in your vehicle.

Infant Inlay

The UPPAbaby KNOX car seat includes a two-piece infant inlay that ensures a proper fit for your child, contributing to both their safety and comfort.

This inlay is designed to accommodate newborns and small infants, providing additional support and ensuring a snug and secure fit.

It consists of two removable pieces that fit into the car seat to adjust the size and shape of the seat for your child.

The first piece is a headrest insert that cushions and supports your child’s head and neck, helping to keep their head from falling forward during travel. The second piece is a body insert that provides additional back and hip support for newborns and young infants.

The fit inlay helps to cradle your newborn or small infant and provides a secure, snug fit that keeps them comfortable and protected during travel.

In addition to providing support and protection, the two-piece fit inlay also helps to make the car seat more comfortable for your child. The soft, plush fabric of the inlay adds an extra layer of cushioning that will help your child stay cozy and comfortable during journeys.

Padding

The padding of a car seat is important to provide a comfortable ride for your child, ensuring that they are comfortable during long car journeys.

For UPPAbaby KNOX, the padding is made from soft, premium fabrics that are comfortable and gentle on your child’s skin. The fabrics are also breathable and moisture-wicking, which helps to regulate your child’s body temperature, keeping them cool and dry during hot weather. There is one pricier version that uses Merino wool.

The thicker the padding is, the more comfortable the car seat is! And this can be easily judged by your eyes.
The UPPAbaby KNOX apparently has ample padding to provide a cozy and comfortable seating surface for your child, while still allowing the car seat to perform to its full potential in the event of a collision.

Another practical aspect of the padding is that it is easy to clean. Accidents and spills are common when traveling with young children, so the padding is designed to be easy to wipe clean and remove for machine washing.

5. UPPAbaby KNOX Safety Rating and Crash Tests

Is it safe to use UPPAbaby KNOX?

The safety features of the UPPAbaby KNOX convertible car seat make it not only reliable but one of the safest car seats on the market. It is built with advanced safety features that are able to provide extra protection for your child while riding in the car.

Passing the crash tests is entry-level protection. It meets or exceeds the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS 213).

Plus, it has a solid shell that is constructed with reinforced steel, which performs to deliver optimal protection while reducing crash impact.

The KNOX also features thick sidewalls made from EPP foam that provides additional protection against impact by absorbing crash energy.

Don’t forget its side impact pods which are built on both sides outer the car seat, helping for additional impact absorption. You can see this as an extra layer of side impact protection.

It applies the company’s innovative Koroyd technology in the base to create a crumple zone for protecting your child from impact forces. That works similarly to the SafeCell zone in the Britax car seats.

Finally, the UPPAbaby KNOX convertible car seat is easy to install using the included rigid LATCH connector or vehicle seat belt. The intuitive seat belt routing and lock-off system ensure a secure fit, providing parents with added peace of mind.

In summary, the UPPAbaby KNOX convertible car seat is a highly safe car seat that parents can trust. With its reinforced shell, thick sidewalls, adjustable headrest and harness, strong side impact pods, and easy installation, the KNOX provides maximum protection for your child while riding in the car.

If you prioritize safety, the KNOX should be a top contender when considering a convertible car seat for your child.

Side Impact Protection

Side impact collisions can be extremely dangerous for young children riding in a car seat. To combat this, the UPPAbaby KNOX convertible car seat features several innovative technologies designed to provide maximum side-impact protection for your child.

The shell features thick sidewalls made from EPP foam, which help to absorb and distribute energy away from your child during an impact.

Another technology utilized by the KNOX is Koroyd. Koroyd technology can be seen on the car seat’s base and helps to reduce the risk of injury in the event of a side-impact collision. Koroyd is an advanced energy-absorbing material that crumples upon impact, reducing impact forces that reach your child.

Additionally, the KNOX convertible car seat includes side-impact pods, built directly into the car seat’s shell. These pods are designed to provide additional protection to your child’s head and torso while absorbing and distributing energy during side-impact collisions.

All of these innovative technologies work together to make the UPPAbaby KNOX convertible car seat one of the safest car seats on the market. During side-impact collisions, the car seat’s reinforced shell, thick sidewalls, Koroyd technology, side-impact pods, and thickly-padded headrest come together to absorb and distribute energy, reducing the risk of injury to your child.

In summary, the UPPAbaby KNOX convertible car seat features several innovative technologies designed to provide advanced side-impact protection for your child. These features include the car seat’s reinforced shell, Koroyd technology, side-impact pods, and an anti-rebound bar. All of these work together to absorb and distribute energy away from your child, making the KNOX convertible car seat one of the safest options on the market.

6. Performance

Weight and Height Limits

The car seat is suitable for rear-facing infants starting at 14 lbs up to 45 lbs and then can be used forward-facing for children from 25 to 65 lbs. The height limit for both rear-facing and front-facing is the same – 49 inches. That’s very common among convertible car seats.

While the UPPAbaby KNOX offers impressive high weight and height limits of 65 pounds and 49 inches, the 14-pound rear-facing weight requirement may be a drawback for some families. This is because many convertible car seats offer a lower minimum weight requirement for rear-facing, such as 4 or 5 pounds.

For families with premature infants or low birth weight babies, the 14-pound weight minimum may not be suitable for their needs. View its alternatives to find one that best suits your needs.

From this point, the KNOX would not be your first car seat – you should have a car seat installed before taking the newborns home but can be used as the next step after infant car seats to extend the rear-facing.

According to AAP, it’s best to keep infants in a rear-facing car seat for as long as possible until they reach the highest weight or height or at least when they’re 2 years of age.

Despite the 14-pound weight requirement for rear-facing, the UPPAbaby KNOX still offers excellent value for families. The high weight and height limits mean that your child can use this car seat for many years, making it a good long-term investment. Additionally, the car seat offers a range of features and safety specifications, providing peace of mind for parents.

Stage / Modes -1st and 2nd

The UPPAbaby KNOX goes through two stages of use: rear-facing and forward-facing. It’s a convertible car seat designed for infants and young children, providing a convenient and cost-effective option for parents.

The rear-facing stage delivers the best protection for infants and young children, reducing the risk of injury in the event of a collision. It’s strongly recommended to keep your kid in rear-facing for as long as possible.

It’s really a pity (and also the biggest drawback) for the KNOX, which has a 14-pound minimum weight requirement for rear-facing. It is fairly high for newborns around 4 or 5 pounds.

Once your child has outgrown the rear-facing weight or height limit, it’s time to transition the KNOX to forward-facing. This stage typically offers less protection than the rear-facing stage and is recommended for use until your child reaches the weight and height limits of the car seat. However, it still offers an excellent level of protection compared to a booster seat or a standard vehicle seat.

One of the benefits of the UPPAbaby KNOX is that it offers high weight and height limits for both the rear-facing and forward-facing stages. This makes it a good long-term option for parents who want a car seat that can grow with their child.

Additionally, the car seat offers a range of safety extras and comfortable features to deliver reliable and cozy rides for your little one

Age Range

The age limit of the UPPAbaby KNOX depends on the child’s weight and height.

The car seat has a minimum weight requirement of 14 pounds for rear-facing, better for infants at least 3 months old.

The high weight and height limits of 65 pounds and 49 inches for both the rear-facing and forward-facing stages mean that the car seat can be used for many years, offering a long-term investment for parents.

With the KNOX, children can remain in the rear-facing stage until they reach 45 pounds or 49 inches, whichever comes first, probably around 3 or 4 years or younger.

Once they outgrow the rear-facing limits, they can then move to the forward-facing stage, which can accommodate children up to 65 pounds or 49 inches. The combination allows for kids around 5 or 6 years to use the KNOX as well.

Airplane

Is UPPAbaby KNOX FAA approved for use on a plane?

If you are planning to travel with your little one and use the UPPAbaby KNOX car seat, you may be wondering if it is FAA approved. The answer is yes. The KNOX car seat is certified for use on aircraft by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Some airlines may require that the car seat have an FAA-approved label or sticker, while others may require that the car seat fits certain dimensions or specifications. So it’s always a good idea to check with your airline before you travel to ensure that you meet their specific requirements.

Additionally, while the KNOX is FAA-approved, it is important to note that not all UPPAbaby car seats are approved for use on airplanes, Alta for example. Before traveling, be sure to check the specific approval status of your car seat model. Find the white sticker on the side of the car seat.

However, you won’t want to take this tank from home to airport and take it through the busy airports. It’s heavy (32.5 pounds) and bulky, even though the manufacturer provides a travel bag.

Lifespan

How long is UPPAbaby KNOX car seat good for

The UPPAbaby KNOX convertible car seat has an expiration date of 10 years after the date of manufacture.

However, the actual usage time is absolutely shorter than 10 years. It needs time to transport the car seat from the factory to the stores.

The expiration date is sometimes imprinted on the white sticker on the side of the car seat; sometimes not, depending on the manufacturer.

Using an expired car seat can compromise its safety and effectiveness in the event of an accident. This is because the materials and components of the car seat can degrade over time, making them less able to withstand the forces of a crash. Additionally, advancements in technology and safety standards may render older models obsolete.

To ensure the safety of your child, it’s crucial to replace your UPPAbaby KNOX car seat after it expires or if it has been involved in an accident. Don’t take any chances when it comes to your child’s safety – always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and guidelines for the use of your car seat.

7. UPPAbaby KNOX Installation

Before starting to install the car seat, you may where to put it. The center of the back seat is probably the safest position to install a car seat.

If possible, install the car seat on that spot. If that seat is not applicable for a proper installation, for example lacking a shoulder belt, either seat on the side would be safe. You may choose any of them based on your family’s and kid’s needs.
