Best Nuna Pipa Car Seat Comparison – Pipa vs Pipa Lite

It’s no surprise that the Nuna Pipa car seat has become one of the most popular infant car seats among young parents. As the Tesla of infant car seats, the Nuna Pipa is sleek, high-tech, and also expensive. Besides the Nuna Pipa car seat series, the other Nuna car seats like the RAVA, REVV, EXEC, and AACE are the most expensive car seats in their category. See also our post on all 14 Nuna car seats.

What the Nuna Pipa car seat impressed us with most is the ultra-large sun canopy that includes the “Sky Drape”  (once called “Dream Drape”) for total coverage. Also, there are lots of superb features that make Nuna Pipa car seats get a few loyal fans.

Pipa was the first Nuna infant car seat but now there are up to six models in the full Nuna Pipa infant car seat series, with four new Nuna Pipa Lite infant car seats. They have slight differences from each other with the basic safety and comfort features being the same. Moving on to read the comparison between the Nuna Pipa and Pipa Lite, and more.

Hope this post helps you know more about the Nuna Pipa car seats and pick the best one suiting your needs, after all, parents have different tastes, opinions, preferences, and budgets to work with. But if you’re planning to purchase a Nuna Pipa car seat, you should have it in mind that the Nuna infant car seat is expensive, the cheapest Nuna Pipa infant car seat (Nuna Pipa Lite) is $280.

Check on the features of the Nuna Pipa car seat and explore more on if the Nuna PIPA car seat is worth it or not.

Is the Nuna Pipa car seat worth it?

The Nuna Pipa car seat (every infant car seat) delivers everything you could ask for in a high-end infant car seat. The brand’s designer wanted to combine cutting-edge safety technology with functionality and style. So it’s no surprise that the Nuna Pipa car seats are simple, practical, and stylish.

It was designed to accommodate newborns with the safest protection as well as max comfort. Is the Nuna Pipa car seat expensive? Yes. Is it worth the price tag? Also yes. If you’re looking for a modish infant car seat with good years of use, then the Nuna Pipa might be the infant car seat for both your child and you.

Nuna Pipa “Sky Drape”

The “Sky Drape” (or Dream Drape) is one of the unique and innovative features of a Nuna Pipa car seat. It allows extendable coverage of the sun shade to keep the inside a dark space without disturbing the sleeping babies in the car seat.

The “Sky Drape” (or Dream Drape) is tucked into the canopy in a zippered compartment and can be pulled down and up smoothly, thanks to the magnets that hold the Sky Drape (or Dream Drape) in place on the sides of the seat.

There are large metal washers carefully sewn into the drape to provide enough room for the baby to breathe fresh air. They are double-compartmentalized to ensure your baby won’t somehow manage to get them out of the drape.

European Belt Path

The Nuna Pipa car seat comes equipped with a European Belt Path that works great for an easier installation in European-manufactured cars.

Harness & Fit

Thanks to the multiple harness and crotch buckle positions, the harness straps can be tightened and loosened smoothly and the chest clip can be moved up/down very easily. Also, the Nuna Pipa car seat includes a low birthweight insert and infant insert to deliver the best fit for preemies as low as 4 pounds.

Removable Inserts & Pads

The Nuna Pipa car seat has a unique infant insert. The infant insert has two parts – the obvious main part is a large insert that goes behind the baby’s head, back, and bottom and the hidden low birthweight insert is a black foam wedge that is tucked into a secret velcro pocket in the underside of the infant insert.

Many parents may not notice this. But the infant insert should be removed as the baby grows. The two parts of the Nuna Pipa car seat infant insert can be removed at different weight ranges.

It’s recommended to remove the low birth weight insert at the baby’s around 7 pounds – you’ll notice it pushes the baby up too high and the straps start to slide off the baby’s shoulders. The main infant insert fits babies well until about 10-14 pounds, but it’s better to remove this once they seem squished in it (either the crotch buckle tongues are digging into the baby’s thighs, or the shoulder straps are starting to slide off the baby’s shoulders).

Shoulder strap covers

That’s good to keep your baby’s neck from harness friction. However, adding them on may increase the pressure on the sides of the baby’s neck and most babies don’t like this. It’s removing them from day one for newborns. If you’re worrying about friction, you may pull the collar a bit upper than the harness to avoid that.

No flame-retardant chemicals

All six Nuna Pipa infant car seats are made of high-end natural materials with no flame-retardant chemicals. The Nuna Pipa Lite LX and RX even include the Merino wool for max comfort.

GreenGuard Gold

The six Nuna Pipa car seats get GreenGuard Gold certification, meeting the stringent emissions standards for over 360 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and chemical emissions.

Nuna Pipa Review

Nuna Pipa Lite

Nuna Pipa Lite / Lite R - 5.3 pounds

Key Features
The Good
The Bad

$350

The Pipa is the OG of the Nuna infant car seats. So it has the most competitive features as any infant car seat from other car seat brands. As a tradition, I’ll review the Nuna Pipa car seat from these aspects: size limit, safety features, ease of use (installation), comfort, stroller compatibility, and bonus.

Nuna Pipa Car Seat Size Limit

All the Nuna Pipa infant car seats have the same size limit: 32 lbs/ 32”. The 32-lb is slightly lower than most infant car seats with a 35-pound weight limit. But that’s not a biggie, babies usually hit the height limit first before the weight limit. This combination is good enough to make the Nuna Pipa a good car seat for 1-year-old infants.

Nuna Pipa Car Seat Safety

Don’t you need to worry about the safety to use the Nuna Pipa car seat? It is FAA approved for car rides and aircraft use. So do the other Nuna Pipa infant car seats. Also, they have a heavy-duty shell and energy-absorbing foam for optimal protection.

Nuna Pipa Car Seat Ease of Use

It’s easy to install the Nuna Pipa car seat with or without the base. The Pipa infant car seat has what’s called ‘rigid LATCH connectors”, which simply click right into the LATCH hooks in your car without needing any force to jam them into place.

There is an indicator to confirm that you have installed the base correctly and tightly – the color turns from red to green. If choosing to install Nuna Pipa with the base, the stability leg would be helpful to keep the base and carrier stable, reducing the wiggle and crash force in case of a crash.

It’s a pity that no positions for choice in the Pipa base. If you do need to adjust the load leg, you may purchase the RELX base, which provides a 4-position and is compatible with the Nuna Pipa car seat. Check our comparison of the Pipa base and RELX base to decide which one is better for you.

The Nuna Pipa car seat also has a European-style belt path, so it’s very easy and stable with baseless installation (except for the Lite series). That’s very convenient for parents who live in the city and often take a taxi or Uber. However, it’s not as lightweight as the Lite series. See the difference between Nuna Pipa vs Nuna Pipa Lite.

Nuna Pipa Car Seat Comfort

It’s obviously a comfortable car seat. The Nuna Pipa car seat has decent padding, and even the included infant insert seems made of soft fabrics. The manufacturer boasts of its high-performance fabric that is flame-resistant and contains no added fire-retardant chemicals.

Nuna Pipa Car Seat Stroller Compatibility

It’s good that the Pipa can be compatible with all the Nuna strollers. It’s not surprising. It’s a common rule that the infant car seats will work with strollers from the same manufacturer. Nuna makes a few awesome strollers that may interest you, including the Pepp Next, the Tavo (Travo Next), the MIXX Next, and the Demi Grow. There are more, check the full list of Nuna strollers.

What’s better is that the Nuna Pipa car seat also has great compatibility with other strollers. With its own-made adapters, the Nuna Pipa car seat is good to work with UPPAbaby Vista and Cruz stroller, the Babyzen Yoyo, the Bob Jogging stroller, and the Bugaboo Fox.

Nuna Pipa Car Seat Bonus - Sky Drape

This should be one of my favorite features of the Nuna Pipa car seat. The Sky Drape is AMAZING.

It is a breathable mesh-like cover that pulls down from the canopy to cover the car seat, much like a car seat cover, but this one is permanently attached to the canopy. It is perfect for blocking out the sun, wind, snow; and more. It’s particularly useful when you want to provide the baby with a quiet and dark condition for sleep.

Just pull it out to block light, without blocking the breath. When the dream drape isn’t in use, you can fold it and zip it into the canopy.

Not all Nuna Pipa infant car seats have the Sky Drape or Dream Drape,  which can be found only in Pipa Lite RX, Pipa Lite LX, Pipa RX, and Pipa.

Nuna Pipa vs Nuna Pipa RX

As an upgrade version for the Nuna Pipa, the Nuna Pipa has a few additional features on the carrier and base – major differences happen to the base (after all they are two different products).

The infant insert and head support are divided into a two-piece design. This allows customization to best fit newborns from birth.

There are two harness holders on both sides to keep the harness out of the way when getting the baby in and out of the carrier.

New RELX base

The RELX base has a lot of improvements versus the original Pipa base, move on to read the Nuna RELX base vs Nuna Pipa base comparison.

Later in 2007 and years after, the Nuna added a Lite version to the infant car seats product line, increasing the complexity to pick up the best Nuna Pipa car seat. There are four Nuna infant car seats in the Lite line: Pipa Lite, Pipa Lite R, Pipa Lite LX, and Pipa Lite RX.

The Nuna Pipa Lite car seats are more lightweight (seems easily get this from their names). All are under 7 pounds in weight, and the Lite and Lite R are the lightest, only 5.3 pounds (without the canopy connected). See also the lightest infant car seats.

If a car seat being lightweight is of utmost importance to you, choose one of the Lite versions. However, you should note that three of the four Nuna Pipa Lite car seats do not support baseless installation. This is probably the biggest drawback. (only the Lite RX supports installation without the base.)

Also, the Lite and Lite R version does not feature the Sky Drape extendable canopy cover.

As the Sky Drape and base are the key difference between these Nuna Pipa infant car seats, we have compared them below. The weight is also different, but not the key factor to decide which Nuna Pipa car seat is the best.

Nuna Pipa vs Nuna Pipa Lite LX

What’s the same for both?

Ease of installation

Both the Pipa and Pipa Lite have the same Pipa base for easy car seat installation. They feature something called True Lock, along with color-coded indicators that let you know that you have all buckles fastened and locks in place. If the indicator shows Green, it means install is complete; otherwise, the red color in the indicator means there’s more to do. This means installation is both easy and reliable—you’ll always be able to confirm that your seat is installed correctly and tightly.

Safety

Both the Pipa and the Pipa Lite LX meet and far exceed U.S. safety standards for infant car seats. With the same Pipa base, they also have one standout feature: a stability leg. Also called a load leg, the stability leg is a fold-down leg that wedges against the floor of your vehicle to stabilize the base and carrier. Plus, it helps help absorb crash forces in the event of a crash.

It’s a major safety plus that can be found in both models and other Nuna infant car seats. (The load leg is the major difference between Pipa base and RELX base.)

Sky Drape

Both the Pipa and the Pipa Lite LX have the Sky Drape, the best car seat canopies on the market. It extends across the entire length of the car seat to create a shady spot that’s perfect for kids to sleep.

Fabric

While there is a slight difference between the fabrics used for the Pipa versus the Pipa Lite LX (more on that below), they’re both high-end and flame resistant but made with no chemicals or fire retardants added.

Stroller compatibility

The Pipa and the Pipa Lite LX also attach to lots of different stroller brands with the addition of adapters, making it easy to create a custom travel system.

What’s different for both?

Installation options

This is probably the biggest difference between the Pipa and the Lite LX.

The original Pipa supports a baseless installation. It features what’s called a European belt path, a built-in pathway that allows you to install the seat using your vehicle’s seat belt rather than the base.

The Pipa Lite, on the other hand, does not. It requires the base for installation. Is this a big deal? For most cases yes. A European belt path means you won’t need to lug around your car seat base every time you want to use your seat in a rideshare, a plane, or when you’re traveling.

You also won’t need to worry about where to store the base when you’re on the go and it’s not in use. Most importantly, you don’t need to purchase a second base in the second or third car. Save money! (After all, the Nuna Pipa car seat already costs over $300.) If you’re using the Pipa Lite, however, you’ll need the base for every installation.

Weight

The Nuna Pipa is a bit heavier than the Pipa Lite LX. The Pipa is the heaviest (although the 7.9-pound is still the lightest on the market.) while the Pipa Lite is the lightest (5.3 pounds), of the six Nuna Pipa car seats. See also lightest infant car seats.

Fabric

Both Nuna infant car seats are made from high-end micro knit fabric. However, the fabric on the Lite LX is made from a blend of Merino wool and Tencel (a super soft, more sustainable fabric), but you won’t be able to machine wash it—it’s spot-clean only.

Price

Both the Pipa and the Pipa Lite LX are expensive seats, but the Lite clocks in at about $20 more than the original Pipa. That’s a slight difference but you still need to spend more when you’re dealing with an already pricey seat.

Nuna RELX vs Pipa Base

Nuna Pipa Base vs RELX Base

The Nuna listened to customers’ feedback and completed a few improvements for the Pipa base. Finally the RELX bases comes to the market. It solves the previous big complaint that people had about the previous Pipa, which was that it couldn’t be installed in most middle seats due to the rigid LATCH connectors and tight connections.

Essentially, the RELX base gives you more positions for your LATCH connectors — and more recline positions. The stability leg on the RELX base has more positions (four vs one), which provides a solution for various usage scenarios. The RELX base also features an anti-rebound panel that is good for enhanced protection. There are four position in the RELX base to adjust the LATCH connectors, while the Pipa base has only one position.

Nuna Pipa infant car seats have wide compatibility with tons of strollers, not only the strollers from Nuna but also the strollers from several other brands.

Other manufacturers also make adapters to make their strollers compatible with Nuna Pipa infant car seats. For example, the UPPAbaby car seat adapter is good to fit the Nuna Pipa car seat to VISTA (2015-2019), VISTA V2, CRUZ, and CRUZ V2 strollers. If you want to place a Nuna Pipa car seat into other strollers from more brands like Britax and Maxi Cosi, check the adapters on Amazon.

FAQs on Nuna Pipa Car Seat

Is Nuna Pipa FAA approved?

All the Nuna infant car seats, Pipa, Pipa Rx, Pipa Lite/ Lite R/ Lite LX/ Lite RX, are FAA approved for car rides and aircraft use. They are lightweight and friendly for travel. The Nuna Pipa Lite and Lite R are among the lightest infant car seats.

But the latter is easier to buy as long as you have an Amazon account. The Nuna adapter is often out of stock on its official website.

Is Nuna Pipa machine washable?

Yes, the Nuna Pipa car seat is made of machine-washable fabric. The manufacturer suggests to machine wash the fabric on a delicate cycle, with cold water and mild detergent, and then allow to drip dry.

Is Nuna Pipa Lite LX compatible strollers?

Yes, the Nuna Pipa Lite LX is not only compatible with Nuna strollers but also good to work with strollers from UPPAbaby and other brands with a specially designed adapter.

Can a Nuna Pipa be used without base?

Among the six Nuna Pipa infant car seats, three of them can be used without the base. They are the Pipa, Pipa RX, and Pipa Lite RX. The last was added recently after the manufacturer listened to the customers’ feedback. The previous three models in the Lite series, including the Lite/ Lite R/ Lite LX, do not support baseless installation.

Can Nuna Pipa be installed in middle seat?

Yes. The Nuna Pipa car seat can be installed in two methods: with the LATCH or with the seat belt. If there is no lower anchor connectors in the middle seat, you can use the seat belt for installation.

Can Nuna Pipa touch front seat

That depends. The Nuna Pipa car seats are very compact. They have a 17.5-inch width narrow profile to do three across in most vehicles. The longest length from the back to the front is 27.3 inches. If you have a large size car, they probably do not touch the front seat; if you have a small car, on the other hand, it’s possible that Nuna Pipa touch the front seat.

Can Nuna Pipa car seat be washed?

Yes. the Nuna Pipa car seat can be washed and the fabric is made of machine-washable fabric. So you don’t need to hand wash when the cover gets dirty. (That’s inevitable for small babies.)

Can Nuna Pipa be used on an airplane?

Yes, of course. All the Nuna Pipa car seats have been tested and certified to meet FAA requirements for car and airplane use. However, airlines may have different configurations from each other. It’s always a good idea to contact the airline prior to confirming the compatibility before onboarding.

The instructions on how to install the Nuna Pipa car seat on airplane can be found in the car seat manual. You’d better read that first.

Can Nuna Pipa canopy be washed?

Supposed yes. According to the manufacturer, the fabric (canopy is also made of soft fabric) can be machine washed on a delicate cycle with cold water and mild detergent.

Does the Nuna PIPA infant car seat have an expiration date?

Yes. Like all car seats, the Nuna Pipa car seat has an expiration date – It’s 7 years. The manufacturer said that the expiry date started to calculate from the date of purchase.

That’s ridiculous. As far as I know, all the other car seats from other brands start with the date of manufacture to get the expiration date. It’s better to follow the common rule. The expiration date is not directly displayed on the label, and you should do a calculation to get the final expiry date with the date of manufacture, which can be found on the bottom of the Nuna Pipa car seat.

How long use Nuna Pipa

The Nuna Pipa car seats will go for 7 years if not experience any crashes.

When to stop using Nuna Pipa

There are several cases to stop using Nuna Pipa:

How to install Nuna Pipa base

Both the Pipa base and RELX base have a load leg for stability and safety. So installing the Nuna infant car seat base may be a bit different from installing other infant car seats

The base can be installed with either the LATCH or the seat belt. You can follow the instructions in the car seat manual.

Or check the Nuna Pipa base installation video from the Car Seat Lady for additional information.

How to install Nuna Pipa without base

Three of the six Nuna Pipa car seats can be installed without the base: the Pipa, Pipa RX, and Pipa Lite RX. The seat belt is the only method to install a Nuna Pipa car seat without base. Both lap/shoulder belt and lap-only belt are good enough.

Here are the instructions in the car seat manual to install Nuna Pipa without base.

1 – Option 1: Route the vehicle lap belt under both lap belt guides and buckle the vehicle belt. Allow shoulder belt to lay against vehicle seat

back as shown.

2 – Option 2: Route the shoulder belt around the back of the child restraint passing through the blue shoulder belt guide.

3 – Option 3: If your vehicle does not have a shoulder belt, the lap belt only can be used.

4 – Adjust the angle of the child restraint. A rolled up towel or foam pool noodle may be used to help adjust the amount of recline.

5 – Angle is correct when blue line on child restraint (located on the label on the side of the child restraint) is level with ground.

6 – Tighten vehicle belt while pushing child restraint firmly into vehicle seat. Lock the vehicle belt. Refer to vehicle owner’s manual for instructions. If you cannot lock the vehicle belt, you must use the provided locking clip. Tension the vehicle belt as much as possible, checking that it is not loose or twisted.

How to remove Nuna Pipa infant insert

The infant insert is good for newborns and small babies, but it should be removed when your kid weighs 11 lbs. Unharness and remove it from the Nuna Pipa car seat.

How to remove the Nuna Pipa car seat from the base?

It’s easy to remove the Nuna Pipa car seat from the base. Just squeeze the car seat release button located on the base. (It’s just on the top of the stability leg), at the same time, you should pull the car seat carrier up to detach it from the base.

Note, removing the Nuna Pipa car seat from the base is foolproof but you should softly complete this, avoiding disturbing the sleeping baby in the car seat.

How to clean Nuna Pipa car seat?

Different parts of the Nuna Pipa car seat have different clean requirements. According to the manufacturer, you can remove and machine washes the fabric-made things like the cover.

For the plastic, vinyl, and metal parts, wipe them with a damp sponge or soft cloth. The harness system should be cleaned with mild soap and water and allowed to air dry.

How to put Nuna Pipa cover back on

After removing the cover for washing, you need to put the cover back on the Nuna Pipa car seat for normal use. The manufacturer has included tips for you to do so. If you prefer a video guide, check this video for reference.

Which Nuna Pipa car seat is best

That depends on your needs. Nuna provides six Pipa car seats for choice and you can always find one that suits both your and your kid’s needs.

If you prefer baseless installation, then the best should be Nuna Pipa, Nuna Pipa RX, and Nuna Pipa Lite RX.

If you prefer an ultra-lightweight model, then any one of the Lite versions would be good. The Nuna Pipa Lite and Lite R weigh 5.3 pounds only, the Pipa Lite LX for 5.7 pounds, and the Lite RX for 6.9 pounds.

If you want a Nuna Pipa car seat with the Sky Drape, there are four options: the RX, the Lite LX, the Lite RX, or the OG Pipa.

What stroller does Nuna Pipa work with

Nuna Pipa car seats work not only with the nine strollers from Nuna but also with a few strollers from other brands like UPPAbaby VISTA/CRUZ, with an adapter. Check the stroller compatibility part above for more details.
