Diono Radian 3RXT Review – A Reasonably Solid Performer

Diono Radian 3RXT All-in-one Car Seat

Overall Rating
4.7/5
Face Rear & Front

Getting top features without the price tag to match isn’t the easiest feat when it comes to child safety seats, but the Diono Radian 3RXT tries to do just that. A reasonably solid performer with a top weight limit of 120 pounds (and its 50-lb rear-facing weight limit is also outstanding), 17-inch narrow width, and a folding design for easy carry, the Radian 3RXT promises a lot. With additional infant accessories like the newborn wedge and infant insert, the 3RXT looks great on paper. However, it’s not all that it cracks up to be. There are similarly priced car seats that put the 3RXT to shame.

2. Who Is It Best For?

Will the Diono Radian 3RXT Be a Good Fit For Your Child and Family?

Advertised as an all-in-one car seat for newborns and big kids, the performance and features suggest exactly that. The 5-120 weight range would be enough to fit growing kids of different sizes and ages making it a good choice as a money saver. The 50-lb rear-facing weight limit is another appealing point for extending the riding time in rear-facing. This means that parents can use the Radian 3RXT for several years, making it a great long-term investment.

As a member of the Diono Radian series, the 3RXT inherits the company’s classic design – slim fit, low-profile, and foldable. Featuring a narrow width of 17 inches, The Radian 3RXT is also ideal for families with smaller cars or those who need to fit three car seats across the back seat. If you want to use it on a plane, it does the job as well.

As an upgraded version from the entry-level 3R model, the 3RXT includes a few accessories like the infant insert to accommodate small newborns better. However, the same level improvements are included in the same priced 3RXT Safe+ model, which boasts six layers of side impact protection. This is something we highlighted as a drawback of its cheaper siblings, including the 3RXT in this review.

3. Value for Money

Is the price tag worth it?

To answer this question, it’s worth comparing the 3RXT to several of the other models in the Diono Radian family – the Diono Radian 3R,  3RX, and 3RXT Safe+. These models (which are also known as the Diono Radian 3R family, owing to the 17-inch width to fit 3 across) have the same size limit, slim fit, and foldable design. But do they represent better value?

I think they do – have a look at the table below to see if you agree.

To me, the Diono Radian 3RXT seems overpriced. It’s the highest-priced, just the same as its premium sibling 3RXT Safe+, but lacks advanced safety features like more layers of side impact protection and does not have as many infant accessories as the latter does.

Of the above, I suggest opting for the Diono Radian 3RXT Safe+ for the best value. As we’ll soon see, this car seat is like the original Diono Radian 3R, but with extra SIP, and a bit more accessories while still at the same price tag.

However, getting the Diono Radian 3RXT from its official website is probably more valuable because there is a sale promotion. For example, the Radian 3RXT bonus pack includes the car seat and extra 6 great travel accessories, which only sell at $299.99 (originally priced at $499.99). What we love is the included seat cover, which helps to protect your vehicle’s seat from leaving a mark after installing a heavy Radian car seat on it.

If you don’t have much budget for a Diono car seat, the entry-level Raidan 3R is a good choice as well. It is a cheap car seat under $200, but lacking inserts for newborns for a better fit in rear-facing. This model is better to be used after infant car seats.

For those not set on buying into the Diono range, there are several other car seats like the 3RXT that offer very similar performance for less. The one that stands out most, is the Graco SlimFit3 LX – which, priced under $300, goes toe-to-toe with the Radian 3RXT to fit three across.

Alternatively, there are the Graco 4Ever DLX and the Britax One4Life that are close in price but deliver significantly more value in some aspects. Head to the ‘Alternatives‘ section of the review where I unpack these car seats in relation to the Radian 3RXT in more detail.

However, you should note that the foldable design can’t be found among other 3-in-1 car seats. From this point, the Diono Radian car seats are unbeatable until now. Doona Infant Car Seat Stroller is foldable but it belongs to the infant car seat type.

4. Design

Diono Radian 3RXT Dimensions and Width

Unlike most car seats that I’ve reviewed, the Diono Radian series, including the 3RXT has a very different design, making it easy to distinguish from the others. (I can tell this because I have researched or reviewed 50+ car seats.) The width of the car seat is apparently narrower than other models I’ve reviewed.

It has become a theme for Diono convertible car seats to have a slim-fit design that can be used to fit 3 across, and the Radian 3RXT doesn’t break the mold. It measures 17″ (width) x 16″ (depth) x 28.5″(height).

The 17-inch width outperforms the 99 percent of the car seats on the market, making it the best option for the narrowest car seats, and also ranks top among the 3 across car seats (just follow the Graco SlimFit3 LX of 16.75″). The short side walls also give us the impression that the 3RXT (and other Diono Radian car seats) is slimmer than its competitors. This case disappears in its sibling – 3RXT Safe+, which has extended sidewalls for better side impact protection performance.

The 16-inch depth is shorter than other models as well, making it fit well in small cars with small seating (the seat pad is only 12 inches wide).

The 28.5-inch height is 3-4 inches higher than most all-in-one car seats. That means it may take a little more space from front to back when it’s installed rear-facing, especially since the Radian 3RXT does not have many recline positions for adjustment.

The low profile should be a good point you may love. After switching it to a front-facing position, toddlers at 3 or 4 years old could climb in and have them sit in the car seat by themselves.

Portability

Constructed with a metal frame, the Diono Radian 3RXT is a bit heavy, weighing 28.1 pounds. You’ll find most all-in-one and convertible car seats are in this weight range. The swivel car seats are probably heavier. The positive point is that this will let parents think they’re solid and strong to deliver protection.

Commonly, car seats with around 28-pound weight are not that portable and it’s not as convenient as those lightweight convertible car seats to switch between vehicles. The Radian 3RXT (and other Diono Radian car seats) is a game changer.

They are heavy, but they have a high score in portability.

They are designed to be foldable, which makes them even more portable and convenient than most car seats for travel. The car seat can be folded up for easy storage and transportation, and it comes with a carry strap that makes it easy to carry the car seat like a backpack with you when you’re on the go.

Foldable design for best portability

How to unfold and fold Diono Radian 3RXT?

1. Place the car seat on its back on a flat surface and unfasten the red carry strap from the bottom. Be sure the harness adjuster moves freely and is not locked within the bottom of the seat.

2. Rotate the bottom until you hear it “click”, this confirms the car seat is locked for use.

3. Check proper operation — Pull harness adjusting strap until harness begins to tighten. If it does not tighten freely, check the belt path on the back of the seat bottom is clear from obstruction. To fold the seat, release the levers as shown and repeat the above steps in reverse.

4. Tuck the red strap through the harness slot and store it behind the cover.

5. To fold, push the lever shown and secure with red strap.

Cup Holder - One

The Diono Radian 3RXT comes with a cup holder that can be attached to either side of the car seat. The cup holder is designed to be easily accessible for children, just near the edge of the seat pad.

The cylindrical cup holder is relatively large and it can hold a wide range of different types of cups and bottles. Whether your child wants to bring along a drink, a snack, or a toy, the cup holder provides a safe and secure place for them to store their items while on the go.

It’s a pity that only one cup holder is included in this $300+ car seat, but better than none. This should be an improvement for the 3R model because you at least don’t need to pay for the cup holder.

Headrest and Harness - 12 Positions

As an all-in-one car seat, the more headrest it has, the better. The Diono Radian 3RXT car seat has 12 headrest positions, which allows for a customized fit as your child grows. The headrest and harness can be adjusted at the same time – thanks to the no-rethread design – and work together to provide maximum comfort for your child while also ensuring their safety.

As your child grows and their height increases, you can adjust the headrest to one of the 12 positions to ensure that the harness straps are at the appropriate height. This helps to ensure that the harness straps are snug and secure, which is important for keeping your child safe in the event of a crash.

What needs your attention here is the harness strap position. In rear-facing, you should always keep the harness straps below your kid’s shoulders so that there won’t much movement in case of a crash; in forward-facing, it’s the opposite – the harness straps should be at or above the shoulders so that they will work correctly to keep your little one stable in the event of a collision.

Reclines - 4 Positions

The Diono Radian 3RXT car seat has 4 recline positions, which can be adjusted to accommodate your child’s size and age for the best fit and max comfort.

It is important to note that the appropriate recline position for your child will depend on their age and weight. Newborns and smaller infants usually require a more reclined position to ensure that their airway remains open and unobstructed. As your child grows and gains more head and neck control, they may be able to tolerate a more upright position.

It’s easy to adjust the recline position, first, locate the recline lever located at the front of the car seat. Then, lift the lever and adjust the car seat to the desired recline position. There are four different recline positions to choose from, ranging from a more upright position to a reclined position that is more suitable for infants.

Infant Accessories

As an improvement for the 3R entry-level car seat, the Diono Radian 3RXT car seat comes equipped with a few infant accessories like the newborn travel high wedge and 2-in-1 infant positioning liner.

They are used to provide added comfort and support for newborns and small infants so that the little ones can reach the lowest harness slots.

The newborn travel high wedge is made of plush memory foam padding and is designed to cradle your child’s head and neck. This helps to prevent their head from flopping forward or to the side during a car ride, which can be uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. It can be removed as your child grows and is big enough to use the harness straps correctly.

It is important to note that the newborn travel high wedge and 2-in-1 infant positioning liner should only be used with infants and young children who weigh between 5 and 15 pounds. Once your child exceeds this weight limit, the inserts should be removed to ensure that the car seat is properly adjusted for its size and weight.

Padding

The Diono Radian 3RXT car seat is made with high-quality materials and padding to provide both comfort and safety for your child.

It sports a steel alloy frame that provides a strong and sturdy base for the car seat. The frame is designed to withstand impact forces during a collision, helping to protect your child from injury.

Plus, it features a combination of foam and energy-absorbing materials that are strategically placed throughout the car seat to provide added protection in the event of a crash. The car seat’s energy-absorbing materials work by crumpling upon impact, which helps to dissipate the force of the crash and reduce the risk of injury to your child.

In addition to its safety features, the Diono Radian 3RXT car seat is designed with comfort in mind. The memory foam padding is plush while the padding is thick and provides support and cushioning. The padding is also designed to be breathable, which helps to keep your child cool and comfortable during long car trips.

Made of soft, durable materials, the seat cover is removable and machine-washable, so it would be easy for parents to keep the car seat clean and fresh to provide a comfy spot for their kids to stay.

5. Diono Radian 3RXT Safety Rating and Crash Tests

Is it safe to use Diono Radian 3RXT?

The Diono Radian 3RXT is considered a safe car seat to use along with your child’s growth. It meets or exceeds all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and is certified for use in motor vehicles in the United States and Canada.

In addition, the Diono Radian 3RXT has been crash-tested to ensure that it provides a high level of protection for children in the event of a collision, in both forward-facing and rear-facing modes.

Sporting a reinforced steel frame that is mechanically engineered and made from automotive grade high strength steel, the Radian 3RXT has a solid build to enhance the protection.

So it’s not surprising that it has also received high safety ratings from reputable organizations. For example, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has awarded the Radian 3RXT a five-star overall safety rating, which is the highest possible rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has also given the Radian 3RXT a “Good” rating, which is the highest possible rating in its testing.

The car seat does not specify how many layers of side impact protection it has. According to our perspective, the Radian 3RXT should have at least one layer of SIP and its sibling 3RXT Safe+ has a clear number of 6 layers.

Side Impact Protection

One of the key features of the Radian 3RXT’s side impact protection is its aluminum reinforced headrest, which helps to absorb and distribute impact forces away from the child’s head and neck. In addition, the car seat has deep side wings that are lined with EPS foam, which provides additional impact protection for the child’s head and torso.

The Radian 3RXT also has a unique SafeStop energy-absorbing harness system that helps to reduce the impact of sudden stops or collisions. The harness is designed to automatically stop the forward movement of the child in the event of an accident, which can help to reduce the risk of injury.

6. Performance

Weight and Height Limits

The Diono Radian 3RXT is an all-in-one car seat designed to be versatile and long-lasting to accommodate children as they grow. The height and weight limits for the car seat are as follows:

  • Rear-facing: 5 to 50 pounds and up to 44 inches in height
  • Forward-facing: 22 to 65 pounds and up to 49 inches in height
  • Booster mode: 40 to 120 pounds and up to 57 inches in height

As you can see, the Radian 3RXT has a wide range of height and weight limits that allow it to be used for many years as your child grows. This can be particularly useful for parents who are looking for a car seat that will provide long-term value and convenience.

Here we would emphasize two points. One is the 50-lb rear-facing weight limit. This makes the Radian 3RXT one of the best rear-facing car seats at 50 lbs. The combination of a 50-lb weight limit and 44-inch height limit makes the Radian 3RXT a good car seat for tall babies for longer rear-facing.

The ability to use the Radian 3RXT in booster mode means that it can be used even as your child gets older and no longer needs a traditional car seat but still needs a boost to sit properly in the car. So the other is the 120-pound weight limit, making this model perform as well as the best car seats with 5-point harness up to 120 pounds.

Stage / Modes

The Diono Radian 3RXT is a highly versatile car seat that can support multiple stages of a child’s growth and development.

The car seat can be used in three different stages: rear-facing harness, forward-facing harness, and high-back booster. Each stage corresponds to a different mode of a child’s development and provides unique benefits and features.

Rear-facing harness is the first stage.

Used in this mode, the Radian 3RXT is good to fit infants and young children weighing between 5 and 50 pounds and up to 44 inches tall. Rear-facing car seats are considered to be the safest option for infants and young children because they provide added protection for the head, neck, and spine in the event of a crash. So it’s better to keep infants and toddlers rear-facing for as long as possible. The 50 lbs/ 44″ size limit is perfect for extending rear-facing.

Next is the forward-facing harness.

The performance for this stage is average: 65 lbs/ 49″. For parents who want the 5-point harness for a longer time, Chicco MyFit and Fit4 might be good options; they both have a 54-inch height limit for forward-facing 5-point harness use.

The last stage is the high-back booster and the Radian 3RXT is capable of riding kids who weigh between 40 and 120 pounds and are up to 57 inches tall.

It has a relatively lower profile but this does not affect its performance to elevate the child’s seating position in the car, allowing the vehicle’s seat belt to fit properly across their lap and chest. Plus, kids around 3-4 years old can climb in the car seat easily so you just need to buckle for protection.

It’s a pity that the Diono Radian 3RXT does not support backless booster mode. Big kids around 6-7 years old probably prefer a no-back booster seat.

Age Range

Designed as an all-in-one car seat, it no doubt that the Diono Radian 3RXT is long-lasting and can be used for many years as your child grows. While there is no specific age limit for the car seat, it is important to note that the Radian 3RXT is designed to accommodate children of different ages and sizes, from newborns to big kids at 8 years or older.

As previously mentioned, the Radian 3RXT can be used in three different stages with different weight and height limits. So here are the recommended age based on those:

Rear-facing harness: the combination of 50 lbs and 44 inches is good for keeping a child rear-facing until 3 or 4 years old. That’s enough to meet child safety seat laws in most states in the US.

Forward-facing harness: the top 65 pounds and 49 inches would be okay to fit a child in the forward-facing 5-point harness around 4 or 5 years old. See also the car seats for 4 year olds and the best car seats for 5 year olds.

Booster mode: 120 lbs/ 57″ top size limit should be high enough to let most kids stay until they’re big enough and ready to stop using a car seat.

Airplane

Is Diono Radian 3RXT FAA approved for use on a plane?

The Diono Radian 3RXT is FAA-approved for use on airplanes.

It is a popular option for parents who are looking for a car seat that can also be used on flights. The Radian 3RXT is designed to be foldable and slim, making it easy to transport and install on an airplane, even though it’s not as light as those lightweight convertible car seats.

When using the Radian 3RXT on an airplane, it is important to note that it should be installed in a forward-facing position and secured using the airplane’s seat belt. The car seat should be placed in a window seat, as this provides the most secure installation and prevents the car seat from blocking the aisle.

It is also important to check with your airline prior to your flight to ensure that they allow the use of car seats on their planes, as policies can vary between airlines. Additionally, some airlines may require that your car seat is labeled as “FAA-approved,” Luckily, you can find that label on the side of the car seat.

Lifespan

How long is Diono Radian 3RXT car seat good for

The Diono Radian 3RXT car seat has an expiration date of 10 years from the date of manufacture. You can find the sticker indicating the exact manufacture date located on the back of the seat. Then do a simple calculation to get the expiration date.

The reason for the expiration date is that over time, the materials and components of the car seat can degrade and become less effective in protecting your child in the event of a crash. Exposure to heat, sunlight, and wear and tear can also contribute to the degradation of the car seat. Therefore, it is important to retire your car seat once it has reached its expiration date, even if it still appears to be in good condition.

It is also important to note that if the car seat has been involved in a moderate to severe crash, it should be replaced immediately, regardless of whether or not it has reached its expiration date. This is because the structure of the car seat may have been compromised during the crash, which can make it less effective in protecting your child in the event of future crashes.

It is important to note that the warranty does not cover damage caused by misuse or abuse of the car seat, normal wear, and tear, or damage caused by accidents or collisions.

7. Diono Radian 3RXT Installation

Before starting to install the car seat, you may where to put it. The center of the back seat is probably the safest position to install a car seat.

If possible, install the car seat on that spot. If that seat is not applicable for a proper installation, for example lacking a shoulder belt, either seat on the side would be safe. You may choose any of them based on your family’s and kid’s needs.
