Chicco Fit4 4-in-1 Car Seat

Overall Rating
4.2/5
Face Rear & Front

Looking for a great affordable all-in-one car seat but don’t want to miss out on outstanding features? Then the Chicco Fit4 could be precisely what you’re looking for. For its premium model, Chicco has moved from its standard budget style and upgraded several crucial components. The result is a car seat that provides enhanced build quality, a great size limit (100 lbs/ 57″),  a 10-year lifespan, and multiple positions for headrest and recline for the best customized fit. Disappointingly, the Fit4’s booster weight limit is on the low side compared to other all-in-one car seats at this price. However, it allows a higher harness height limit (54″) that is unbeatable of all car seats with a 5-point harness. This superior harness capacity combined with ergonomic design, 21.5-inch width, and two cup holders means that the Fit4 offers more than enough to ensure your kid’s comfort in the car seat.

2. Who Is It Best For?

Will the Chicco Fit4 Be a Good Fit For Your Child and Family?

At first, it might seem difficult to pinpoint who the Chicco Fit4 is best suited to. It’s not as cheap as some budget models and it has only a 100-pound top weight capacity, which is slightly lower than some of the same-level all-in-one car seats (120-pound weight limit).

The answer lies in its height limit and ergonomic design. Most car seats will have a 49-inch maximum harness height limit, which allows a kid to be secured with the 5-point harness around 5 years old. The Chicco Fit4 extends the harness riding time with a 54-inch height limit, making it good for tall kids to stay in the 5-point harness for as long as possible – its combination car seat Chicco MyFit has the same height limit for forward-facing harness mode.

As well as suiting tall kids, the Fit4 is ideal if you’re a loyal fan who has known the Chicco brand and would like to pay the high price for its car seats (the Chicco and Britax car seats are usually more expensive than Graco car seats).

3. Value for Money

Is the price tag worth it?

The Chicco Fit4 is significantly more expensive than the Evenflo EveryStage with a listing price of $209.99 and our best recommendation is Graco 4Ever DLX ($329.99).

At $379.99 (listing price, the actual may be cheaper), the Fit4 may cost more than you’re willing to spend on a budget or a cheaper all-in-one car seat. While this means that it’s not a great deal for every family, for some parents, like my Friend Julia, the enhanced design, ease to use, extra features, and awesome harness height limit mean it’s well worth the extra money.

If you’re on a tight budget and looking to pick up an entry-level all-in-one car seat with the most practical features, you’d better off looking for true budget models like the Safety 1st Grow and Go. Still, the Fit4 is a great option if you’re a parent that wants to keep your kid in the 5-point harness for a longer time.

The Fit4 also comes with lots of extra details that add value; for example, the 10 positions for the headrest and 9 positions for reclining are great to achieve a customized fit for growing kids. Plus, the removable cup holders and machine-washable fabrics offer convenience for both kids and parents.

4. Design

Dimensions and Width

As an all-in-one car seat, you can imagine that the Chicco Fit4 would be a bit bulky. Its real dimensions measure 21.5″ (W) x 16″ (D) x 26″ (H).

Compared to other narrow car seats within 20 inches in width, the 21.5-inch is fairly large. While the manufacturer boasts of its ability to fit three across, yes there is an image showing three Chicco Fit4 in the same row side by side. I really doubt this!

In our recommendations, only slim car seats as narrow as 17 inches or 17.5 inches at most would be a good fit to do three across, like the Graco SlimFit3 LX (16.75″) and the Diono Radian 3R and its premium siblings (17″).

However, if you have a large-size SUV and have measured the inner seat dimensions that are wide enough to fit the car seat stably, and you really like this Chicco all-in-one car seat, you may give it a shot. Otherwise, there are a lot of narrower car seats for option.

  • Seat Area Dimensions: 13.5″ (W) x 12″ (D)
  • Headrest Height: 6.5″ – 19″
  • Harness Slot Heights: 5.5″ – 17.5″
  • Buckle Strap Depth: 4.5″, 6″

Its 26-inch height may be a bit tall for small cars or cars with lower ceilings, but it should fit well in most mid-sized and larger vehicles. Its depth of 16 inches is relatively compact, which may make it easier to install in small cars or cars with limited backseat space.

The headrest height is 19 inches while the height of the top harness slot is 17.5″; They are high enough to fit growing kids at a different pace. Don’t need to worry that your kid will outgrow the car seat before they’re ready to use the vechile seat belt.

Portability

Weighing approximately 25 pounds, the Chicco Fit4 is considerably heavy as other all-in-one car seats and most convertible car seats. While it is not the lightest car seat on the market, it is not considered overly heavy either, if compared to rotating car seats that average 30 pounds in weight.

But the 25-pound weight may still make it a bit challenging to move the car seat around frequently, but it is still portable enough to be moved between vehicles or taken on road trips, not the best option for air travel, even though it’s FAA approved for airplane use in harness modes.

If you want a travel car seat, you’d better pick one that is either lightweight for handy carry or folding for easy storage. Check our post on the best portable car seats or best foldable car seats to find one.

Cup Holder - Two

Designed for accommodating toddlers and big kids, how can a car seat not have a cup holder? (We’re looking at you Britax Marathon, Advocate, and Boulevard). The Chicco Fit4 comes equipped with two cup holders. They are removable and are made of dishwasher-safe silicone material, easy to use and maintain.

Cup holders are a good convenience. They can be used to hold drinks, snacks, or other small items. Located on both sides in the built-in slots at the outer edge, they’re within easy reach for both kids and parents who sit aside the kid.

However, some users have reported that the cup holders can be a bit shallow and may not be able to hold larger drinks or snacks securely.

Additionally, because the cup holders are built into the car seat, they may make it more difficult to fit the car seat into narrower vehicle seats. Overall, the cup holders on the Chicco Fit4 car seat are a useful feature, but they may not be ideal for every family’s needs.

Color Options

Having been sold for years, the Chicco Fit4 does not have as many color options as it was launched. There are only two color options available on Amazon: Onyx and Stratosphere.

They are not specific for girls or boys and are designed gender-neutral, with shades of gray, black, and blue being the most common.

Headrest and Harness - 10 Positions

As a car seat designed for growing kids, the Chicco Fit4 has 10 headrest positions, which can be adjusted to accommodate your child’s growing height and ensure a comfortable fit. The headrest can be adjusted by pulling up on the headrest adjustment lever, which is located at the top of the car seat.

The headrest position is important for your child’s comfort because it affects the fit of the car seat’s harness. The harness should be placed in a proper and appropriate position for safety and comfort considerations. For example, in rear-facing, the harness should be at or below your child’s shoulder; after switching to forward-facing, the harness must be at or just above your child’s shoulders to ensure a secure fit and maximum protection.

As your child grows taller, you’ll need to adjust the headrest to ensure that the harness is positioned correctly. Luckily, the harness can be adjusted along with the headrest simultaneously.

The Chicco Fit4 car seat’s 10 headrest positions make it easy to find the right fit for your child, which can help ensure their comfort and safety during car rides. Additionally, the headrest is padded and features soft fabric, which can also add to your child’s comfort during long car rides.

Reclines - 9 Positions

What will be more impressive about the Chicco Fit4 is the recline positions – up to 9, which is as many as that of the Britax One4Life.

The Chicco gives a name for this – ReclineSure® leveling system, which allows 9 different recline positions that can be adjusted to provide the most comfortable and safe fit for your child, depending on their age and size.

The recline positions can be adjusted by squeezing the recline handle located at the front of the car seat.

The recline position is important because it can impact the way your child’s head and neck are positioned, which can affect their comfort and safety during car rides.

For example, a more reclined position may be more comfortable for a newborn or young infant who can’t yet hold their head up on their own, while a more upright position may be more comfortable for an older child who wants to sit up and look around during car rides.

In addition to comfort, the recline position can also affect the safety of the car seat. The correct recline position can help ensure that your child’s head doesn’t fall forward and compromise their airway, especially if they fall asleep during the ride.

Additionally, some car seats, like the Chicco Fit4, have different recline positions for rear-facing (4-position) and forward-facing (5-position), to ensure optimal safety in each mode.

Infant Positioner and Toddler Pad

Different from other brands called the infant accessories infant insert or body support, the Chicco gives this a unique saying – 4-Stage FitKit System, including an infant positioner, toddler pad, 5-point harness, and deluxe shoulder pad.

I have to admit that Chicco is talented at giving new concepts for these common features. But these accessories are really good for keeping the little passenger safe and comfortable finally.

The infant positioner is actually an infant insert that is used to ensure the newborn is in a proper posture in the car seat. Made of soft and breathable fabric, it delivers comfort. It’s only used for small infants less than 16 pounds and can be removable if your kid grows over this weight limit.

The toddler pad works as the body support to offer proper fit for bigger infants between 12 and 40 pounds.

The 5-point harness is necessary for kids in both rear-facing and forward-facing, no matter whether your little one is just a newborn or grow to preschooler at 4 or 5 years old, as long as they’re within the 65-pound weight limit or 54-inch height limit, they can use the Chicco Fit4 with the internal harness.

After your kid outgrows the top harness weight limit or height limit – whichever comes first and uses the Fit4 in booster mode, they are secured with the vehicle seat belt. At this time, the shoulder pad is good for proper seat belt positioning, along with seat belt guides.

Padding

The Chicco Fit4 car seat uses a variety of materials in its construction, including plastic, steel, and foam. As a high-end (at least from its price point) car seat, the Fit4 is equipped with relatively thick padding and soft fabrics that are designed to keep your child comfortable during car rides, while also providing the necessary support and protection.

The padding used in the Chicco Fit4 is thick enough to provide ample cushioning for your child, while also being firm enough to provide support and stability. The car seat features multiple layers of foam and other materials that work together to absorb energy in the event of a crash, while also providing a comfortable ride for your child.

So do the fabrics. The car seat features breathable fabrics that help keep your child cool and dry during car rides, while also being easy to clean and maintain.

Overall, the materials and padding used in the Chicco Fit4 car seat are designed to provide a comfortable and safe ride for your child, while also being durable and long-lasting.

5. Safety Rating and Crash Tests

Is it safe to use Chicco Fit4?

Share this secret with you – all car seats sold in the US should meet or exceed safety standards established by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). So does the Chicco Fit4.

It has been rigorously crash tested in both frontal and side-impact collisions to ensure that it provides maximum protection for your child, as well as several unique safety features.

4-Stage FitKit System: The 4-stage FitKit system provides adjustable headrests and shoulder straps that can be customized to fit your child’s size and shape. This ensures that your child is properly secured in the car seat, regardless of their age or size.

Dual-Layer Side-Impact Protection: The car seat includes a dual-layer foam-lined shell that provides extra protection in the event of a side-impact collision. The foam layers are designed to absorb and distribute crash forces, helping to reduce the risk of injury to your child.

EPS Energy-Absorbing Foam: The car seat is lined with EPS energy-absorbing foam, which is designed to help absorb and distribute crash forces. This helps to reduce the risk of injury to your child in the event of a collision.

SuperCinch LATCH Tightener: The SuperCinch LATCH Tightener makes it easy to install the car seat tightly and securely in your vehicle. It uses a force-multiplying technology to tighten the LATCH straps quickly and effectively, ensuring a tight and secure fit.

Side Impact Protection

The Chicco Fit4 car seat includes side impact protection (SIP) to help protect your child in the event of a side-impact collision. It includes a dual-layer foam-lined shell that provides extra protection in the event of a side-impact collision.

The first inner layer of the SIP is the EPS energy-absorbing foam, which is designed to absorb and distribute crash forces in the event of a collision. This foam layer helps to reduce the risk of injury to your child by absorbing the impact of the crash.

The second outer layer of the SIP is the rigid shell with a foam layer. This layer provides an extra layer of protection against side-impact crashes. The rigid shell helps to distribute crash forces and provides additional protection for your child’s head and torso.

Together, these two layers of side-impact protection help to ensure maximum protection for your child in a side-impact collision.

6. Performance

Weight and Height Limits

The Chicco Fit4 is an all-in-one car seat designed to grow with your child, providing a range of height and weight limits to ensure that your child is safe and comfortable throughout their early years. Here are the height and weight limits for this car seat:

Rear-facing mode: The weight limit for this mode is between 4 and 40 pounds. The height limit is 43 inches or less. It is recommended to keep your child in the rear-facing mode for as long as possible until they reach the maximum height or weight limit. The 40 lbs/ 43″ combination would probably go for infants around 2 years old to stay rear-facing.

Forward-facing mode: Once your child has outgrown the rear-facing mode, either the weight limit or the height limit, it’s time to switch the Fit4 to the forward-facing mode, which is suitable for children between 25 and 65 pounds until 54 inches tall. Your child should be at least 2 years old before using the forward-facing mode and stick to this mode until around 5 or 6 years old. The 54-inch harness height limit is unbeatable among car seats with a 5-point harness up to 100 or 120 pounds.

Booster mode: When your child has outgrown the forward-facing mode, use the Chicco Fit4 in booster mode. The weight limit for this mode is between 40 and 100 pounds. The height limit is between 38 and 57 inches. Your child should be at least 4 years old and weigh at least 40 pounds before using the booster mode.

Stage / Modes

The Chicco boasts of Fit4 as a 4-in-1 car seat that supports three stages and four modes. Actually, it’s a 3-in-1 car seat – three stages and three modes, according to the NHTSA’s definition of car seat stages.

Rear-facing harness stage. This is the first stage and car seats need to be used facing the back. Chicco Fit4 in this stage can accommodate newborns and small kids between 4 and 40 pounds. The manufacturer divided this stage into two – infant (4-16 pounds) and toddler (12-40 pounds).

They’re theoretically (according to the NHTSA’s saying and child safety experts’ suggestion) one. As the majority of convertible car seats in rear-facing positions can have this weight limit or even a higher rear-facing weight limit would be able to extend rear-facing for a longer time.

Forward-facing harness stage. The kids still use a 5-point harness for security at this stage. The best point is that the Chicco Fit4 (and MyFit) has a winning 54-inch height limit in this stage/mode. That’s the highest we’ve found on the market.

Booster stage. This is the last stage in that your kid needs a car seat (after this, they’re big enough to use the vehicle seat belt). In this stage, the harness is removed and stored. The kid is secured with the lap and shoulder belt, while the backrest still exists to provide solid support.

Usually, there are two modes – high-back (with backrest for use) and backless (with backrest removed). But the Chicco Fit4 is not able to switch to the backless mode. The backrest is not removable, making it a fake 4-in-1 car seat. Our database has three rear 4 in 1 car seats: Graco 4Ever DLX, Graco Grows4Me, and Evenflo EveryFit. All three support no back and can be used without the backrest.

Overall, the Chicco Fit4 car seat is designed to last from infancy to early childhood, providing a safe and comfortable seat for your child throughout their early years. The car seat includes a range of features to accommodate your child’s changing needs, including an adjustable headrest and harness positions, and a removable infant insert.

Age Range

The best practice is to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on height and weight limits for accurate switch timing between stages and modes. However, the age limit gives us a rough estimate of when children may transition, even though we know that each child grows and develops at their own pace.

So, most manufacturers would recommend an age range for their car seats. If not, we can also get an estimated age limit based on height and weight limits. Here are the general age ranges and details for each stage of use:

  • Rear-facing: 4-40 lbs/ 43″ – Newborns and toddlers around 2 years old
  • Forward-facing: 25-65 lbs/ 54″ – small kids and preschoolers around 5 or 6 years old
  • Booster: 40-100 lbs/ 57″ – big kids at least 4 years old to 8 years or older.

Airplane

Is Chicco Fit4 FAA approved for use on a plane?

The Chicco Fit4 car seat is FAA approved for airplane use, which means it can be used on airplanes. However, it is not the most suitable for air travel, in terms of weight and size

The car seat weighs approximately 25 pounds, which can make it difficult to carry through airports and onto planes. Additionally, the car seat is fairly large and bulky, which can make it difficult to fit into narrow airplane seats and aisles.

If you plan to travel by plane with your child, it’s important to choose a car seat that is FAA approved for air travel and is lightweight and easy to carry. You may also want to consider purchasing a travel bag to protect the car seat during transit and make it easier to transport.

Lifespan

How long is Chicco Fit4 car seat good for

The Chicco Fit4 has an expiration date of 10 years from the date of manufacture. The expiration date is typically printed on a label located on the bottom of the car seat or on the back of the car seat shell.

Car seats expire because the materials and components can deteriorate over time, which can impact the car seat’s safety and effectiveness in crashes. Additionally, as car seat technology advances and safety standards change, older car seats may not meet current safety regulations.

To ensure your child’s safety, it’s important to follow the car seat manufacturer’s guidelines for use and expiration. If you’re unsure about the expiration date of your Chicco Fit4 car seat, you can check the label on the bottom or back of the car seat or contact Chicco customer service for assistance.

Check our post on other Chicco car seats expire detail.

Warranty

The Chicco Fit4 car seat comes with a limited warranty that covers defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase.

This means that if you experience any issues with your car seat during the first year of ownership, Chicco will repair or replace the car seat at no cost to you.

Additionally, Chicco offers extended warranties for purchases, which can extend the coverage period beyond the initial year. These extended warranties are optional and come with an additional cost, but they may provide added peace of mind for some parents.

7. Chicco Fit4 Installation

Before starting to install the car seat, you may where to put it. The center of the back seat is probably the safest position to install a car seat.

If possible, install the car seat on that spot. If that seat is not applicable for a proper installation, for example lacking a shoulder belt, either seat on the side would be safe. You may choose any of them based on your family’s and kid’s needs.

Chicco Fit4 Rear-facing Installation
