What are the best Britax car seats? It’s much easier to answer this question.

Unlike Graco which has released a ton of car seats to dominate the market, Britax focuses much on simplifying the lines and providing a few Britax car seats for choice. I love this idea, though the Britax is less popular because they are more expensive.

It’s understandable because Britax moves car seat belt installation to the next level, thanks to its ClickTight technique.

In this ultimate guide for the best Britax car seats, we reviewed the top 6 models of different types. We also list and compare all Britax car seats belonging to the same type. Click the button below to explore the Britax car seats in that type – infant, convertible, and booster.

If you have one chance to get a Britax car seat, the Britax One4Life is the best choice

My friend Jessica has been using this seat for about 2.5 years with her 3-year-old toddler and just purchased another for her 3-month-old boy because she loves it so much.

You won’t believe that. Her little girl still stayed rear-facing. Yes, Britax One4Life is one of the best extended rear-facing car seats with a 50 lbs weight limit (The others include Graco Extend2Fit and Diono Radian series).

Plus, the size limit for booster mode is unbeatable: 120lbs/63″. Most all-in-one car seats may reach the 120-pound weight limit, but not the 63″ height limit. They are 57″ at most.

In most US states, 57″ tall is the minimum requirement in the local child safety seat laws when your child does not need a car seat. It seems that 63″ is not necessary, but more suitable for taller kids.

The Click Tight technique makes it a breeze to get a tight installation. It’s the recommended installation method in the user manual. There are two buttons on the bottom of the seat that you can press together to lift the seat pad. Thread the belt, and buckle, adjust to remove any slack, and then press the seat back down until it clicks (you’ll hear a loud ‘click’).

Britax One4Life ClickTight

I here have a bonus tip for you (that’s from my friend Jessica): to achieve a tight install, you can sit or kneel on the seat to remove the slack from the belt. In this way, the car seat doesn’t budge at all.

It does have LATCH but Britax does not have much time or energy on this. So you’ll get a common flexible (not rigid) LATCH system.

As far as comfort goes, there appears to be plenty of padding to ensure your child stays comfortable. There is an infant insert for newborns and small infants.

Britax One4Life is made of machine-washable fabrics and you can easily take the seat fabric off to wash, just follow the instructions in the user manual. The cup holders are excellent. They can be easily removed for washing as well. Just a reminder, don’t put a kid’s water bottle over 12 oz in the cup holders. It may not fit well.

The Britax One4Life is not a slim fit or lightweight car seat. You can know this at first sight.

If you frequently need to switch between different cars, the Britax One4Life probably is not the car seat for you. While it removes and reinstalls easily, it is quite heavy and cumbersome to move it around from one car to a different one.

The 19.5-inch width means that Britax One4Life won’t be a good option to fit 3 across as those narrow car seats. However, you could fit 3 of these across with a bench seat in large SUVs or minivans.

But in a smaller vehicle, two Britax One4Life could definitely fit in the outboard seats but an adult would definitely struggle to fit in between. The seat however feels like a tank and this was a big factor in purchasing a second for your second baby.

Britax One4Life Install in Vehicle

The seat adjusts very easily as your little one has grown. The straps easily adjust by moving up the headrest (even though this is very common among car seats).

Moreover, you can effortlessly adjust the tension on the straps by pulling the strap at the leg portion of the seat and releasing it by pressing a button below the Click Tight and pulling the straps. This is very friendly for tall babies and toddlers to have plenty of legroom while rear facing.

The only down point is the price. Britax One4Life is on the pricier side, with a normal sale price of more than $350.

Another issue with the seat is the storage position for the user manual. It’s directly under the seat cushion, behind the child’s back, resulting in a more uneven surface for the child to sit on. Not to mention that it would likely get torn up from all the in and out and moving around of the child.

Britax B-Safe Gen2 Flexfit - Best Britax Infant Car Seat

Last month when my friend was backing out of a parking space, another lady hit her car at over 25 mph, near the door side the seat was on. The door was badly indented.

Luckily, she has buckled the baby fully and tightly. The 1-year-old baby was fine, with no injuries, scratches, or trauma. That was a really scary moment for her but she started to believe that the car seat worked well to prevent injury for the baby.

Only after you experience reality, you’ll believe it’s true. However, the protection provided by a car seat is not a brag.

The B-Safe Gen2 is the best Britax infant car seat. It’s the safest carrier you can use to ride a newborn. It has all the safety features that your little one will ever need. I really like the idea of the crash absorbers.

As a carrier, the Britax B-Safe is easy to detach from the base and convenient to use at restaurants, shops, grocery stores, and anywhere your little one falls asleep and you’re not ready to wake them.

This car seat is very roomy and has a nice soft fabric for newborns. The harness is sturdy and easily adjusted. You can complete this with one hand which is also important to moms. The best thing is that it is easy to install and adjust. With the built-in levels indicator, you’ll know the car seat is installed in the proper position.

This car seat is sturdy with a solid build. It is a bit larger than some other infant car seats so I wouldn’t recommend this if you have a small car.

Weighing 20.8 pounds (including the base), Britax B-Safe Gen is a bit, not a lightweight seat, especially compared to the lightest infant car seats. But I don’t feel like that’s a huge issue for us, or if you don’t plan to carry the car seat for a long time.

It’s on the pricier side, compared to the more popular Graco infant car seats.

Another thing to consider is that Britax B-Safe Gen is only an infant car seat and can only be used facing backward. That means, your precious probably outgrow it around 1 year old, due to the 35lbs/32″ size limit. Some taller babies may reach this limit sooner.

Britax Marathon - Narrowest Convertible Car Seat

Britax Marathon ClickTight Convertible Car Seat

Britax Marathon

Key Features
The Good
The Bad

$329.99

The Marathon is the best Britax convertible car seat for its narrow profile, making it one of the best narrowest convertible car seats below 19″ wide.

The Britax Marathon should be the narrowest convertible car seat, including the all-in-one type. Measuring 18.5 inches wide, the Britax Marathon should probably do 3 across in some large cars, even an adult will be able to sit between two of these car seats.

My friend Bonnie has one for her 10 months little girl. She needs to place the infant girl rear-facing in a 2015 Honda Civic. You can imagine how compact the car is with little cabin space. But she finally got the Britax Marathon installed tightly on the back window seat.

It’s a pity that there is not much legroom as the little girl grows. If you prefer an extended rear-facing with more leg room, the Britax One4Life is good, or turn to another brand – Graco Extend2Fit, which is a strong competitor to Marathon.

Installation should be easy with ClickTight. Of course, you should learn this first. I strongly recommend you follow the instructions manual to install the Britax Marathon. The seat belt installation with ClickTight is the best way. That’s also recommended in the user manual.

The Click Tight utilizes your vehicle’s seat belt and then has a ratcheting system that removes any slack from the vehicle’s seat belt. This should be easy if you have tried several times. For most parents, it’s easier than using the LATCH for installation. There are many YouTube videos on the ClickTight installation.

Britax Marathon is on the pricier side, around $300 (you can get it at a cheaper price if it’s on sale). It is certainly high quality and comfortable for your child to stay in. But if you don’t have much budget for a convertible car seat, there are many cheaper options.

But Marathon might be the cheapest Britax convertible car seat. The other two models – Boulevard and Advocate are more expensive, over $300.

It’s a pity that the Britax Marathon does not include even one cup holder. This is really an unbelievable thing that happened to an expensive car seat almost $300.

Check the comparison between Britax Marathon vs Boulevard vs Advocate.

Britax Allegiance 3 Stage - Cheap without ClickTight

Britax Allegiance 3-Stage Convertible Car Seat

Britax Allegiance

Key Features
The Good
The Bad

$229.99

Britax car seats are expensive, not including the Britax Allegiance, which is almost $100 less expensive.

However, it does not have the ClickTight tech for seat belt installation. Instead, it just comes with common LATCH connectors.  This needs more attention and trial before you can get a proper and tight installation.

Some safety features used on the premium models with ClickTight can be found on Allegiance as well. The Allegiance is packed with SafeCell technology, including a reinforced steel frame, energy-absorbing foam, and a crumple zone. It’s safe to ride your little one in the car seat.

Britax Allegiance has two modes: rear-facing mode and front-facing mode. It caters to newborns from 5 pounds and lasts a few years until your child reaches 65 pounds. It’s a friendly extended rear-facing car seat. You can keep your child rear-facing until 40 pounds or 49″ tall.As you know, this rear-facing mode offers the most protection possible.

It’s not a lightweight car seat, but lighter than most Britax car seats on the market. It’s a pity that the fabric used in Britax Allegiance is not machine washable. This is the biggest down point. I can’t imagine this kind of car seat is still selling on the market. But it seems less parents use this car seat.

It does not have a cup holder either, like Marathon and other Britax convertible car seats. You won’t believe that happens to a car seat over $200.

Britax Grow with You ClickTight Harness 2 Booster

Britax Grow with You CT

Key Features
The Good
The Bad

$339.99

The Grow with You ClickTight is the best Britax combination car seat.

It does a tremendous job of keeping your children very comfortable and most importantly very safe.

The Britax Grow with You Click Tight is covered with very comfortable memory foam all over which makes it very nice for the little ones, especially on long road trips. There are nine positioning headrests to adjust to your kid’s growth. This is a car seat with a base, which allows 2 positioning reclines to achieve a comfortable fit, no matter small or big kids.

The Britax Grow with You Click Tight seems to be more suitable for taller kids. It has a bigger size limit: 120lbs/63″. That’s the same as the Britax One4Life. That means your child can use it for the day when he or she doesn’t need a car seat anymore.

Actually, 57″ or 8 years old are the most commonly seen age or height requirements to get out of a car seat and are ready for using the vehicle’s seat belt.

This unit is on the pricier side. It’s understandable. First, it has two modes for use. It’s a combination car seat.

You can use it in forward-facing mode with a 5-point harness until your child reaches 65 pounds or 49 inches tall. That typically happens around your child’s 5th or 6th birthday.

Then you can smoothly transition it to the booster mode and use it until your child hits the top weight of 120 pounds or top height of 63 inches.

Britax Grow with You ClickTight Install in Vehicle

Luckily, it has two cup holders. They are even built-in into the car seat. Built-in cup holders may increase the width or reduce the sitting room in the seat bottom. The Britax Grow with You ClickTight chooses the first. But the overall width is just 19 inches wide, making it a good narrow car seat under 20″.

This is another Britax car seat with ClickTight tech. So you won’t be surprised it’s priced over $300, right? ClickTight is really a good thing to have, but it does increase the price as well.

It was a breeze to install with ClickTight. This new clicking system works extremely well and tightens the unit without effort.

Find the button inside the bottom area of the backrest and click it to raise the bottom section up. Then put the vehicle’s lap-shoulder regular seat belts through it, putting it tightly. The last step is to push the bottom section over it until it clicks in place.

In this way, the Britax Grow with You ClickTight grabs the seat belt so tight that you can’t move the unit anywhere. Finally, hook the back tether belt behind the seat and you’ll be impressed by how tight the seat becomes.

Britax Grow with You ClickTight Feature

The ClickTight with seat belt installation is the top recommended way in the user manual. You may find that the button position for opening the bottom section is a bit different from other Britax car seats with ClickTight.

Make sure to follow the instructions in that brochure. There are a few installation videos on YouTube for reference.

There is a Plus version with one more layer of side impact protection, which is more expensive and I don’t think it’s worth spending more on this upgrade. A lower-end version is also available, cheaper but not machine washable. I don’t recommend it either. A car seat needing hand washing can be a challenge for most busy parents.

Britax Highpoint High Back Booster Seat

Britax Highpoint

Key Features
The Good
The Bad

$199.99

We can’t avoid accidents, but we can prepare for them.

Last month my friend came across a car accident with her 4-year-old little boy in this unit. A guy hit them going over 40 mph and they were at a dead stop. Luckily, all of them are safe. Her son completely didn’t feel a thing, just kept sleeping. Thanks to the Britax Highpoint booster seat!

This unit is considered the one of safest booster seats. Not only this unit has a rigid steel shell and energy-absorbing foam, but it also has triple layers of side impact protection. That beats most booster seats on the market, even other Britax car seats don’t have triple layers of SIP (only Advocate does). This makes it clearly a much more robust product.

The headrest works well to provide comfortable support when your child falls asleep. There are 10 positioning adjustments for growing kids. That’s good to pair with the big size limit. Yes, this unit has the same limit as other Britax all-in-one car seats or any booster seat – up to 120lbs/63″.

This allows big kids under 10 years old to stay safely and comfortably in the car seat. The decent padding in the backrest and seat cushion is made of energy-absorbing foam to ensure safety and comfort.

Plus, the Britax Highpoint has two cup holders. They are removable and can be thrown into the dishwashing machine for cleaning. That’s better than the Britax Grow with You Clicktight which has two fixed cup holders.

There are two modes to use the Highpoint booster: high back and no back. You can use it as a high back booster at first when your child is 5 or 6 years old, then remove the backrest and turn it into a backless booster for big kids 7 years or older. Of course, if your kid is willing to stay in a high back booster, keep them in that mode.

When do Britax car seats expire?

How long Britax car seats are good mainly depends on the type.

  • Britax infant car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture.
  • Britax convertible car seats (including the all-in-one type) expire 10 years after the date of manufacture.
  • Britax booster seats (including harnessed boosters) expire 9 years from the date of manufacture.

We have listed this information for all Britax car seats on the comparison table, also including the Britax car seats’ manual links.

Luckily, the expiry date of each Britax car seat is imprinted on a white label that is stuck to the car seat, on the top of the back, and behind the headrest.

Visit this post on Britax car seat’s expiry date to learn more details.

Where to install the Britax Car Seats?

If you’re planning to install a Britax car seat, here comes the question: where is the safest position to place the Britax car seat?

The center seat in the back row is considered the safest position to install a car seat. It should be your first choice to install Britax car seats as well.

Britax car seats have the unbeatable advantage to sit well in the rear center seating position.

Those Britax car seats with ClickTight can be easily and properly installed with a seat belt. That would be very helpful if there is no LATCH in the center seat of the back row in your vehicle.

If you prefer to install Britax car seats on window seats, then the spot behind the driver and the passenger have an equal safety level, as long as you have installed the Britax car seats properly.

Recalled Britax Car Seats List 2022

We draw this list of recalled Britax car seats in 2022 based on the data of the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator).  You can check what Britax car seats have been recalled and confirm if your Britax car seat has been on the list or not.

We do this list to help you avoid buying a car seat that has been through a recall event.

But this is impossible as the Britax company should have recalled all Britax car seats that have been found faulty.

It’s best to register the Britax car seat once you receive it. You can do this via the user manual, or contact the manufacturer’s customer service.

Buyer’s Guide - What Features Make Britax Car Seats Safest

Britax does not have many models available on the market. The company has simplified its product lines and you can easily find the best Britax car seats based on your needs.

But we still want you to know the necessary points to pick up a perfect car seat, not only for Britax but also for comparing the car seats between different brands.

Safety

It’s the most important thing to consider when purchasing a car seat. With Britax, you can’t go wrong. They make the safest car seats. This is why so many Britax car seats got to-rated on Consumer Reports.

First, you should know that all car seats on the US market meet safety standards. These car seats are tested for front and rear collisions and provide side-impact protection with the help of a 5-point harness.

But not all have the same-level SIP (side-impact protection). Some car seats are one layer, most have two layers, and a handful of Britax car seats have three layers, like the Britax Advocate and Highpoint. Diono Radian 3QX and its higher-end siblings have more than triple layers of SIP.

The steel frame is a great thing to have, better than a plastic frame. Plus, energy absorption is useful because the impact force doesn’t spread to your little one’s body.

Install

Proper installation is fundamental for your child’s safety in the car seat. A lot of kids got injured or even died due to improper installation. This is the only controlling factor that parents can do to ensure the little passenger’s safety.

Most car seats support LATCH and seat belt installation, but they have pros and cons. LATCH connectors (especially rigid ones) are averagely easier to install, but they have a weight limit. Seat belt installation does not have a weight limit, but they’re more difficult to use.

ClickTight changes the game. It moves the seat belt to the next level, even much easier than LATCH. It’s so easy that even grandparents will be able to install it without effort.

Size Limits

This is where you can protect your child while saving money. It’s best to choose a Britax car seat that will last a good few years and leave room for your child to grow.

The math is simple, the longer time you can use it, the more money you save.

Also, take into account if the seat allows extended rear-facing or harness mode. Extended rear-facing is recommended until the age of two. Harness mode offers more protection than the booster.

Britax all-in-one car seats have the biggest size and limits, like the Britax One4Life (5-50lbs for rear-facing and up to 120lbs/63″ for booster).

Washability

Machine washing or hand washing, which do you prefer? I’ll definitely choose the machine washable car seats. I’m sure you’ll choose the same as me.

After being a parent, you won’t have much time to hand wash a seat cover.

It’s a pity that earlier versions of some Britax car seats only allowed hand washing. As far as I know, the Grow with You (no ClickTight feature), Highpoint, Allegiance, Emblem, and so on. These car seats are not made of machine-washable fabrics.

Color Options (Bonus)

Using a unisex color is good for the manufacturer to save costs. But this is not friendly for parents who want to have a different colored car seat for their little girls.

This is a very optional and personal choice, so it is not necessary anyway. Luckily, Britax car seats provide multiple color options. Britax One4Life is one of the best purple car seats.

FAQs on Best Britax Car Seats

Which Britax car seat is the safest?

By far the Britax Advocate Clicktight is the safest Britax car seat. It is packed with company-level safety features, along with triple layers of side impact protection.

Is Britax a good car seat brand?

Yes, Britax is a good car seat brand. They have a big line up including a few models to satisfy multiple needs. They make the safest car seats and they are easy to install.

Why are Britax car seats so expensive?

Britax car seats are so expensive because they deliver the best performance on safety and installation. For example, they have car seats that have 3 layers of side impact protection (Advocate and Highpoint). Plus they have the ClickTight system for easier installation with the seat belt.

What’s a good alternative for the Britax Advocate Clicktight convertible car seat?

The Britax Marathon Clicktight convertible car seat or other convertible car seats like the Graco Extend2Fit or Chicco NextFit Zip.

What are the weight and height limits for Britax car seats?

Britax car seats in the same type group have similar weight limits and it’s broken down into stages.

Britax infant car seats have a size limit: of 35lbs/ 32″. That’s good for small infants.

Britax convertible car seats have a size limit of 65lbs/49″ for forward-facing; 40lbs/49″ for rear-facing.

Britax all-in-one car seats have a size limit at 120lbs/63″ for booster mode; 65lbs/49″ for a 5-point harness forward-facing; 50lbs/49″ for rear-facing.

Britax booster seats have a size limit of 120lbs/63″.

From all the Britax car seats what is the best convertible car seat?

Britax car seats have many convertible models. The best convertible car seat would be the Britax Advocate Clicktight; it has the highest side-impact layers. The runner-up would be the Marathon ClickTight. It’s the narrowest Britax convertible car seat with ClickTight.

Can you fit three across with Britax car seats?

The Britax infant car seats are good to fit three across, but other Britax car seats are not slim fit for 3 across. The narrowest convertible car seat should be Britax Marathon ClickTight. It’s 18.5-inch wide, one of the best narrow car seats but does not fit 3 across in most vehicles.

What kind of safety standards do these Britax convertible seats have?

When it comes to safety standards Britax makes car seat safety a top priority.  All Britax car seats are manufactured meeting or exceeding the federal safety standards. They can deliver protection from the front and rear.

Plus, all Britax car seats with the 5-point harness provide side impact protection. The difference is how many layers depending on the specific models. A few Britax car seats have three layers of side impact protection, like the Advocate and Highpoint

Some Britax car seats have an anti-rebound bar that helps to dissipate the crash energies. The Britax car seats may not include an anti-rebound bar default, but you can purchase one and attach it to the seat. However, the anti-rebound bar can only be used in rear-facing mode.

What other car seat features are there?

The first is the SafeCell technology that is used in most Britax car seats. This system includes a metal frame, EPS-energy-absorbing foam, and a crumple zone.

Some Britax car seats have the crumple zone outside in red color, some not. This really reduces and spreads the crash energy for enhancing protection.

Britax car seats have great size limits and a lot of positioning for headrest adjustment and base reclining. That would be great for taller babies and kids.

The seat cover is removable and easily washable. Most Britax car seats are machine washable, except for earlier models. You should read the product description carefully to make sure not to choose a car seat that is hand-washed, like the Highpoint, Allegiance, and Grow with You (without ClickTight).

What kind of alternatives are there for Britax convertible car seats?

Good alternative convertible car seats would be the Graco Extend2Fit, Chicco NextFit Zip, Safety 1st Jive, and other convertible car seats from other brands.

However, ClickTight is unbeatable and irreplaceable. So other convertible car seats are just better in a specific aspect that Britax convertible car seats are weak.

For example, Graco Extend2Fit is more popular than Britax convertible car seats; Chicco NextFit Zip has a zip-off design to easily remove the seat cover off; Safety 1st Jive is the cheapest and one of narrowest convertible car seats (narrower than the Marathon).
